Representing survivors of sexual abuse brings unique challenges. Berman & Simmons attorneys Michael Bigos and Elizabeth A. Kayatta offered their expert insights to a group of legal professionals at a recent Maine Trial Lawyers Association (MTLA) continuing education seminar: “Sexual Abuse Survivor Claims.” They also shared best practices and discussed the emerging approach of trauma-informed lawyering. Other topics covered investigations, common defenses and collectability of survivors’ claims. Finally, they addressed the need for attorneys and staff to practice self-care to prevent and reduce vicarious trauma from doing this work.
