Berman & Simmons Abuse Survivors’ Team Advises Patience, Accessing Mental Health Support Pending Decision on Maine Catholic Diocese Appeal
Last November, Berman & Simmons attorneys representing dozens of survivors of childhood sexual abuse by clergy and staff of the Maine Catholic Diocese argued to Maine’s highest court to affirm the new law allowing civil suits without a time limit.
When approached by a Portland Press Herald reporter, attorney Michael Bigos said, “Today marks 301 days since we were before Maine’s Law Court to defend the constitutionality of the law that provides survivors of childhood sexual abuse with access to justice – on their terms when they are ready, and regardless of how much time has passed.”
Some of the clients that the firm represents are in advanced age – some in their 80’s, and many have serious health issues that add to the sense of urgency for a decision to let their cases move forward.
Attorneys in Berman & Simmons Sexual Abuse Survivors Group advise clients to seek guidance from mental health providers and local MECASA-member advocates. “After coming forward, no one has to go through this alone.”
