About Berman & Simmons

“People deserve access to justice and the highest quality representation, no matter their wealth, background, or circumstances. This philosophy has sustained us for the past century, and hopefully will continue to do so for the next 100 years.”
― Jack Simmons

Helping the people of Maine for over 100 years

The story of Berman & Simmons began in 1914 when Benjamin Berman hung a shingle on Lisbon Street in Lewiston, Maine. Berman and his brother David became known as trusted advocates for the men and women who worked at the city’s many textile mills and shoe factories. Their commitment to working Mainers and their willingness to take on the most complex and controversial cases remain hallmarks of the firm today.

Over time, Berman & Simmons has evolved from a general practice firm to a more specialized statewide plaintiff’s trial law firm with a focus on personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death, defective products, defective drugs, and medical devices, and winning complex cases where our team’s expertise and unmatched skills make all the difference. As powerful advocates for civil justice, we are dedicated to fighting tirelessly on behalf of those who have been injured through no fault of their own.

Today, even with the COVID-19 challenges we face, our exceptional work continues. We are accepting new clients and maintaining regular contact with our existing clients via email and phone consultations. We’re holding meetings, working closely with medical providers, and moving our current caseloads forward―including negotiating settlements―all within a virtual-office infrastructure. We’re carefully monitoring the news in Maine regarding the coronavirus disease and being proactive in our efforts to respond to medical guidelines while taking measures to ensure the health and safety of our employees, clients and the general public.

Driven to be the best

With 18 lawyers, Berman & Simmons is widely recognized as the best personal injury law firm in Maine. Indeed, we work tirelessly every day to be not just the best trial firm in Maine, but one of the very best in the country. We have won some of the largest and most controversial medical malpractice and personal injury verdicts in Maine history and have achieved a long history of trial success. In fact, two of our firm’s landmark cases have been recognized in The National Law Journal’s Top 100 Verdicts. In many other cases, we have succeeded in advancing Maine laws that, in turn, have helped ensure access to justice for all Mainers.

As knowledgeable, trustworthy legal experts, our attorneys have been elected as Fellows of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers and serve on the American Board of Trial Advocates and the American Association for Justice. We have received special recognition from the leading guides to America’s top attorneys and litigation firms, including America’s Top 100 Attorneys, The Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, Benchmark Litigation, Chambers and Partners, Martindale-Hubbell, and the exclusive Inner Circle of Advocates.

Devoted to making our clients’ lives better

Berman & Simmons takes pride in obtaining extraordinary results for clients through our expertise, resources, experience, and mastery of civil jury trials.

We are dedicated to the people we represent and making a positive impact in the life of each client. For us, it’s about the clients we serve:

  • An electrical line worker who lost his lower legs when he was electrocuted on the job. Our team uncovered a trail of corporate negligence that led directly to the tragic incident, and we were able to hold those companies accountable. In doing so, we were able to provide the worker’s family with the financial security they deserve.
  • A mother whose son was born with cerebral palsy after her labor was mismanaged. Despite an aggressive defense by the hospital, we won her case, insuring her son has the medical care he will need for the rest of his life.
  • A father of five who was killed in a collision with a wood chip truck. A jury agreed with us that the truck’s brakes were not properly maintained, causing the incident. Because of this, we were able to recover compensation for his children for their tragic loss.

We’re proud to provide seriously injured clients the unmatched resources and talent necessary to ensure their story is heard so they can begin getting their lives back on track.

With offices in Portland, Lewiston, and Bangor, Maine, our team is dedicated to serving the state of Maine as well as the greater New England area.
