About Berman & Simmons
“People deserve access to justice and the highest quality representation, no matter their wealth, background or circumstances. This philosophy has sustained us for the past century, and hopefully will continue to do so for the next 100 years.”
― Jack Simmons
Representing the people of Maine in all types of plaintiff's cases for over 100 years
The story of Berman & Simmons begins in 1914 when Benjamin Berman hung a shingle on Lisbon Street in Lewiston, Maine. Berman and his brother David became known as trusted advocates of the men and women who worked at the city’s textile mills and shoe factories. Their commitment to blue-collar Mainers and their willingness to take on the most complex and controversial cases, remain hallmarks of the firm today.
In 2014, we celebrated 100 years of serving the people of Maine. Once a general practice firm, Berman & Simmons has transformed into a more specialized firm focusing on personal injury, medical malpractice, dangerous drugs and medical devices, and complex trial matters.
Today, we are widely recognized as the best personal injury law firm in Maine and among the best in the U.S., having won some of the largest medical malpractice and personal injury verdicts in Maine history. In fact, two of our landmark cases have been recognized in The National Law Journal’s Top 100 U.S. Verdicts and many of our cases have advanced Maine law to protect the rights of those who have been injured or harmed because of someone else's negligence.
Our story includes the awards and recognition we’ve received and our track record of success in personal injury and medical malpractice cases. But more importantly, it's about the people we’ve represented and the positive impact we’ve made in their lives.
- It’s about an electrical line worker who lost his lower legs when he was electrocuted on the job. Our attorneys uncovered a trail of corporate negligence that led directly to the incident. We held those companies accountable and provided the family the financial security they deserve.
- It’s about a mother whose son was born with cerebral palsy because her labor was mismanaged. Despite huge odds, we won her case against the hospital, allowing her to give her son the medical care he needs, for the rest of his life.
- It’s about a father who was killed in a collision with a wood chip truck. A jury agreed with us that the truck’s brakes were not properly maintained, and his five children received compensation for their tragic loss.
We are proud to be the trusted firm in Maine for people who have been seriously injured, and families that have suffered losses, through no fault of their own. We are a statewide law firm of 17 attorneys and more than 40 staff members with offices in Portland, Lewiston, and Bangor, Maine.
