Maine Sorin Stockert Heater-Cooler Lawyers

A “heater-cooler” device commonly used in many surgical procedures, primarily open-heart surgeries, can be a source of serious infections that may have put at least 500,000 patients at risk. The Sorin Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler System, which helps keep the body’s organs at a safe temperature and helps keep blood circulating during surgery, was recalled in July 2015 because it was found to transmit bacteria into patients during surgery. In December 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety warning informing doctors and hospitals of the danger of acquiring a potentially deadly Mycobacterium chimaera infection during a heart or lung surgery involving the use of a Sorin Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler Unit.

The dangers of Sorin Stockert 3T Heater-Coolers

About 60 percent of the 250,000 surgeries performed in the U.S. every year involve the use of a heater-cooler device, and the Stockert 3T model was one of the most commonly used. It maintains body temperature and blood flow during surgery by storing water in a tank and keeping that water at a specific temperature in order to heat or cool a patient’s blood or body as required.

Vapor from the water stored in the heater-cooler’s tank can be released into the air during surgery through the device’s exhaust vent. The problem is that this water vapor can be full of bacteria that developed inside the tank because of improper or inadequate cleaning and maintenance procedures. That bacteria can then travel through the vapor into the air and then into the patient’s body during surgery.

The infections most associated with the use of the Sorin Stockert Heater-Cooler are nontuberculous mycobacteria infections. These infections can often be benign, but they can also lead to severe illness and even death. Given that most surgical patients have weakened immune systems, they are particularly vulnerable to the more severe consequences of such infections.

What makes these infections even more insidious is that symptoms can take months or years before they manifest. These symptoms can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained fever
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Night sweats
  • Joint pain
  • Malaise
  • Muscle aches
