SGLT2 Inhibitors

If you suffered health complications while controlling your type 2 diabetes with Invokana or other SGLT2 inhibitors, you might have a claim for compensation

Maine SGLT2 Inhibitor Lawyers

Lowering blood sugar and increasing insulin levels are critical for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, many popular medications used to control type 2 diabetes have been linked to severe and sometimes fatal health complications.

These FDA-approved drugs, known as SGLT2 inhibitors, lower blood sugar by causing the kidneys to remove sugar from the body through the urine. They remain on the market and millions of Americans take them every day. But these drugs have been under scrutiny by the FDA and other experts for their connection to conditions such as diabetic ketoacidosis, heart attacks, kidney damage, severe genital infection, and other problems.

The many dangers of SGLT2 inhibitors

The FDA issued a warning about Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors in May 2015 after 20 cases of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) were linked to SGLT2 inhibitor use between March 2013 and June 2014.

DKA occurs when the body cannot use glucose as a fuel source due to low or non-existent levels of insulin. The body breaks down fat for energy instead, which produces ketones and makes the blood more acidic. High levels of ketones in the blood are toxic and require immediate medical attention.

DKA is far from the only problem connected to SGLT2 inhibitors. In May 2016, the FDA also warned of an increased risk of leg and foot amputations in patients treated with Invokana or Invokamet. In August 2018, the FDA issued yet another warning about SGLT2, this time involving the risk of developing a serious infection of the genitals and area around the genitals called necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum, also referred to as Fournier’s gangrene.

Additionally, SGLT2 inhibitors have been linked to increased risk of kidney damage as well as myocardial infarction.
