Maine Voices: An Advocate for civil justice found his inspiration in a ‘champion’

OP-ED in Portland Press Herald

Stephen Schwartz, a prominent Portland lawyer and longtime friend to Berman & Simmons, wrote an excellent op-ed about senior partnerJack Simmons, and Simmons’impact on the legal community in Maine. The opinion piece was published today in the Portland Press Herald. Click hereto read the piece on the Press Herald website.

Schwartz congratulates Simmons on receiving the Justice Louis Scolnik Award from the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine. Schwartz also says that Simmons was one of the lawyers who inspired him to establish the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

“Jack retired from actively representing clients, but his fearlessness and sense of duty to the public carry on at Berman & Simmons, a plaintiffs’ firm that turns 100 this year,” Schwartz wrote. “As a leader of that firm, Jack demanded excellence from his fellow lawyers, and he instilled the philosophy that all Mainers deserve access to justice, no matter their wealth, background or the power of their legal opponent.”
